Feeding Recommendations

In general, feed ½ to 1 lb. per 100 lbs. body weight per day. For best feeding practices, Foal & Weanling™ should be introduced gradually.

The following amounts are for an average size riding horse type, such as Quarter Horses, Standardbreds and Thoroughbreds (1100 to 1300 pound mature body weight). The actual amount should be adjusted according to the body weight of the horse and expected growth rates.

Horse Amount of Feed (lb./day)
Suckling foals Allow 1 lb. per head per day per month of age. Actual feeding levels will vary with the milk supply available from the mare.
Creep feeding Feed only what will be consumed in one day. Any leftover feed should be discarded and the amount of feed allotted should be reduced accordingly.
Weanlings Feed 1 lb. per head per day per month of age.

The quality of the pasture/hay for very young horses is particularly important. They should have available the best quality forage. Always provide clean, fresh water and salt. Do not feed additional proteins, vitamins or minerals except on the advice of a nutritionist.

Consult your veterinarian concerning proper health programs and always maintain a good worm control program.
